Jānis Lūsens (born in 1959) is a renowned Latvian composer, who in the 1980s gained international recognition with his experimental band Zodiac.
Over the last three decades the composer has turned his attention to instrumental and vocal music, operas and musicals. He received the Latvian Theater Prize as best composer (1996, 1999), the Great Music Prize in Latvia (2000) and in 2003 and 2014 the Copyright Infinity-Preis. It is awarded by the Latvian Agency for Copyright and Communication Consulting and the Latvian Authors' Association.
In 2009 Jānis Lūsens received the Order of the Three Stars. That is the highest state decoration in Latvia, acknowledging the composer's unique contribution to the development of art and culture in Latvia.
He is the author of 2 operas, 14 musicals, 8 works of instrumental music, 17 works of vocal-instrumental music and theater music, as well as more than 500 songs with lyrics of renowned Latvian poets.
